Writing Challenge: The Backdrop

Still waters, calm trees. The sky surrounding all, even the land too far away to see.
This, all of this, would simply be the backdrop. Like, how when you write a story.
You create the characters, and you create the setting.
And sometimes the setting can be infuriatingly dull and simplistic.
Like "her house."
Or "the park."
Or sometimes, it can be like this.
And when it's like this
You should stop
And look
And wonder.
With a photo, you capture a moment.
And sometimes it's a moment of joy.
When your little sister loses her first tooth.
And it can be sad too,
To commemorate someone who died.
But whatever the case
You are focused on the central image, on the person or thing you wished to capture.
Sometimes people take pictures of just the trees, the water, and the wind.
But many are so focused on one thing that you lose sense of the backdrop that made it all possible.
The backdrop, is the true mystery.
It's easy to get caught up in the people-related things, you know, what's going on.
But when you take a step back
You truly see.
Here, in this picture
I did not capture a moment of joy or a moment of despair.
Instead, I just captured the backdrop.
Because sometimes, the things in the background can be the most beautiful of all.
Because unlike the person or thing at the heart of the picture
They are not clamoring for attention.
They sit back, and wait to be noticed.
So I did.
